New national guidelines to help landlords clean up health hazards left behind by clandestine drug labs have been published.
The step-by-step guide offers advice and guidance on cleaning up the resideues that can be left behind by illicit drug manufacture, and which be highly toxic. While police dismantle and remove chemicals and equipment, it is the property owner's responsibility to clean up residues.
Federal justice minister Brendan O'Connell said that, while each state and territory had their own procedures, but it was time for a national framework.
"I don't believe that has been done as well as it could have been done and I think this step-by-step guide is critical," he said.
The guidance gives advice on limiting access and help for home owners who might have to engage industrial cleaners to make their properties safe again.
70% of illegal labs are found in residential areas, and the number of drug labs dismantled by police has increased by 50% over the last two years nationally.
