For Adelaide and South Australia, the Olympic Dam is the potential catalyst for the much-needed recovery in the state’s economic fortunes.
Assuming the confirmation of the development will be released in the coming months, Adelaide suburbs and those towns around the Eyre Peninsula are set to benefit. These include Whyalla and Port Augusta as they offer port facilities and services to the mine. Whyalla in particular also offers infrastructure that can be tapped into from the One Steel days and is potentially the site of a desalination plant according to Andrew Peterson.
Closer to Adelaide, established and highly sought-after suburbs such as Unley, Wayville, Torrensville,
Kensington and West Hindmarsh all made it to the Top 100 list.
Analysts say Adelaide will benefit as greater cash flow washes through the state as mining activity picks up.
