AT A GLANCE
Best property investment: A property next to Tower Bridge in London, England
Purchase price: £190,000 in the late 1990s
Sold for: £340,000 a year after purchase
Andrew Winter shot to fame when he started hosting the real estate show Selling Houses Australia in 2008. However, his love affair with property began much earlier than that.
“Since I was a kid, I’ve always had a passion for real estate,” he says.
While working at a real estate agency in England in 1985, Winter bought his first house. Not long after that, he found a gem of a property in the heart of London, located beside Tower Bridge.
“I bought it when the market was still a bit in the downward cycle in the late 1990s. I couldn’t believe I’d got it so cheap!” he says.
After some affordable upgrades, Winter was able to resell the property at a significant profit the following year, which funded a family home that he purchased with his wife.
“My biggest regret was that we ever sold it – it’s probably worth £1.5m today,” Winter says.
His property investments have allowed him to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle, but he adds that there was never “a lightbulb moment” when he decided to focus purely on the profits.
“I have just always loved houses,” he says, “and the chance to make money was just the icing on the cake!”
